3 Tips for Utilizing De-Icers this Winter

Boating is a way of life at the Lake of the Ozarks. Therefore, the best boat lift company at the Lake of the Ozarks would like to help you protect your important Lake asset this winter, your boat! Winter maintenance goes a long way in helping to keep your boat safe from the winter elements. In this week's blog, we're highlighting how a de-icer can protect not only your boat from the winter elements but your dock and shoreline as well.

How Does a De-Icer Work?

A de-icer works to circulate warmer water from deeper water up to the surface of the water. Effectively melting existing ice, preventing new ice from forming, as well as protecting your boat and dock from the winter elements.

De-Icing the Boat

When looking to de-ice a boat stored in water (should you not have a boat lift already), installing a de-icer at or near the bow, angled towards the stern is your best bet. Larger boats may require multiple units to properly de-ice an area. The goal is to have the de-icer follow the natural contour of the boat's hull to provide the most effective results.

De-Icing Shallow Water

De-Icing shallow waters can be achieved by directing the flow of the warm water from deeper water into the shallow area. Circulating the warmth upwards towards the surface, where it shifts and melts existing ice as well as preventing new ice from forming.

De-Icing Docks & Shorelines

Directing the flow of warmer water from the depths into a retaining wall or shoreline will create a "T" shaped pattern. This flair will provide an ample amount of open water around the dock. If you'd like to exclude the shoreline from de-icing and would just like to focus on the dock itself, install the de-icer vertically and consider installing a curtain to prevent further water flow.

As you can see, using a de-icer is an effective way to reduce the risk of sustaining damage to your boat or dock during the winter months.
