4 Checklist Items Before Boating this Spring

At Poly Lift, we understand that our fellow boating enthusiasts are itching to get into some warmer weather so they can hit the water. After all, we live at a nationally renowned recreational Lake, and with springtime inching closer and closer, now is the time to prepare your boat for some fun! In this week's blog, we thought it fitting to help you get ready so when spring is in full swing, you're ready to cruise!

Check Your Boating Registration

The first step of business, ensure that you're boat is up to date on its registration. This item can be easily overlooked, but you'll be thankful you took the time to do so should a DNR officer or water patrol ask for it. Plus, you'll have a happy officer... and that's a win-win.

Examine, Clean, & Prep Your Boat

Inspect the hull of your boat for any cracks, buildup, or lesions that may have occurred during the winter season or while being stored. Be sure to give your hull a good cleaning with a marine-safe cleanser to avoid removing any existing wax. Applying an extra coat of wax is also advised to ensure it's covered throughout, protecting its finish and enhancing performance. Clean all windows, hatches, etc to ensure good visibility at all times.

Inspect All Electrical Systems & Components

It's likely your boat has been sitting dormant for a few months. Be sure to check the battery and recharge or replace it as needed. Check the terminals for corrosion and clean if there are any signs of corrosion. If your boat's battery is in need of water, add distilled water to maintain performance as tap water can diminish it. Ensure the boat's bonding system is functioning properly. Inspect all wiring for wear or fraying, test gauges, and be sure the shore power system is working to save fuel while idling.

Inspect The Engine

Before you fire up the engine, be sure to change the oil and filters. This ensures your engine is primed with what it needs to perform out on the water. Check your coolant, if it's discolored change it. Inspect all belts for tension, fraying, or signs of wear (be sure to check their alignment while you're at it). This one's especially important, check and clean the backfire flame arrestor. This will prevent vapors from gasoline from igniting if your engine backfires.
