9 Docking Your Boat Tips!

Docking a boat is not an easy task. Our Lake of the Ozarks boat lift company knows even the most experienced boaters can have a difficult time docking when the water is rough. It is key to practice docking your boat under all circumstances. Here are some helpful docking tips for a smooth docking experience every time.

1) Never approach the dock any faster than you are willing to hit it

You never know what unpredictable obstacles will cause your prized possession to do the exact opposite of what you intend to. As a precaution, it is best to approach solid objects slowly so that in an uncontrollable circumstance, your boat “hit” won’t be detrimental.

2) Applying more power than nature.

This contradicts what was covered above, but when you are driving the boat, you need to be using enough power to compensate for the wind and water current. You need to be telling your boat what to do or nature will take over.

3) Always keep an eye on your lines

If any lines fall into the water, they could fall into the water and get tangled in the propeller. This will make docking virtually impossible. Never let any line fall into the water.

4) Never turn the engine off until all lines are secure

Do not shut down as soon as you see the boat is in the slip. You cannot predict if a crewmember might drop their line or if a piling will fall out of reach. Keep the engine power on so you can move when it is necessary.

5) Don’t hesitate to abort and start over

If the approach is not going well and you can see you may need to start over, do it. DO not force the issue further, just circle back and try again. Always better to be safer than sorry.

6) Orient the fenders so they don’t get caught under the dock or swing above

Position the fenders properly, judging where the boat will meet the dock. Protect the pressure points!

7) Always turn the wheel before applying force

Not during or after. Turn the wheel always before applying power to your boat. This will ensure you won’t blast forward or reverse before the starboard kicks in.

8) Always give short surges of power

Do not build up a steady amount of momentum, but instead, give small surges of power so you always have more control over your boat.

9) Practice

Make sure to practice and practice again until you feel comfortable docking.
