Ways To Ensure Your Boat Lift Lasts A Long Time!

Purchasing a boat lift at the Lake of the Ozarks, or anywhere for that matter, is a rather large investment. As such, you’ll want to ensure you’re taking proper care and maintenance of your lift to ensure it lasts. As your premier boat lift company at the Lake of the Ozarks, Poly Lift is here to discuss proper boat lift maintenance to keep your lift sturdy for years to come. Read on to discover a few tips!

1. Abide by the Weight Warning

Every boat lift has its own specifications for what size boat it will be able to handle safely. Never exceed the specified weight limit on your boat lift as it can result in extensive damages. Also, be sure that the lift suits the specific hull design of your boat.

2. Ensure Cables & Cradle Remain Above the Water

While the boat lift is made from resistant materials to help prevent corrosion, do not leave your cables submerged in water for prolonged periods of time. This helps to further prevent the growth of bacteria, barnacles, and electrolysis.

3. Regularly Rinse the Cables & Cradle Assembly

You’re cable and cradle system are the bread and butter for raising and lowering your boat out of the water. So, having them last and be as strong as possible is important. To help them stay that way, it’s advised to rinse them regularly to avoid any buildup of algae or barnacles. This helps to prevent corrosion or abrasions from forming that could lead to breakage.

4. Oil those Cables

Being made of stainless steel, boat lift cables should be regularly oiled with a penetrating oil to reduce the risk of abrasions. It also helps lubricate the cable strands, so they don’t rub against one another. Note, ensure that your penetrating oil doesn’t contain grease.

5. Check the Winder

Monitor your winder as you raise and lower your boat as having slack can cause tangling, leading to potential damages. Uneven wear will shorten the lifespan of your cables and could cause breakage.

6. Ensure Proper Sheave Alignment

To be sure that pressure is evenly distributed among the lift cables, check for proper sheave alignment.  Uneven alignment can shorten the lifespan of both the cable and the sheave alike. If you’re unsure about the correct alignment for your sheave, contact Poly Lift Boat Lifts – we’ll get you setup right!

7. Inspect Cables for Wear or Damage

Routinely inspect your cables for signs of damage or wear. You should never risk using compromised cables on your boat lift. If you notice any kinks, abrasions, or other damages, repair it immediately. A cable break could lead to extensive damages to your boat lift, dock, the boat, or even the operator/bystanders.
